  • Always wear suitable protective clothing when you're working with readymix concrete materials, making sure your skin and your eyes are well covered.
  • If any wet cement comes into contact with your skin, either directly or by soaking through your clothes, wash the area straight away with soap and water.
  • If any gets into your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with clean water.

All about Readymix Concrete

Q. How can I ensure that I use minimix readymix concrete safely?

minimix concrete is a strong, hardworking product that shouldn't come into contact with skin. There's a real danger of contact dermatitis or burns, so please take care and follow our safety advice.

  • Always wear suitable protective clothing when you're working with readymix concrete, making sure your skin and your eyes are well covered.

Read our Readymix Concrete Safety Data sheet (pdf, 222kb) and Safety page for full details.

Q. How quickly should I place my concrete after it is delivered?

The rule of thumb is concrete must be placed within two hours of loading time. So if they are an hour away from the nearest plant they will have only one hour on site etc. Hot weather can significantly reduce this time on stronger mixes.

Q. How long does the concrete take to set?

We would normally advise you to wait at least 24 hours for the readymix concrete to set; this however would be subject to design and application requirements.

For example: if laying a driveway you should be able to walk on it within a few days but it's not advisable to park a car on it for at least 10 days.

Q. How do I pick a concrete consistency?

All our applications list a specific consistency in the description.

If you need a wetter or a dryer mix than that listed, please call us to place your order.

Q. What if I need a specific concrete consistency?

Please call us to place your order specifying the consistency you require.

Q. Do I need to use a hardcore under the concrete?

Yes, you cannot lay concrete on soil or on an unsteady non compact surface. When it settles it will be uneven and won't hold the weight of the concrete and cause it to break.  Compacted hardcore can help as you should always work off a solid foundation.

Q. What is a slump?

A slump is the measurement of workability. The normal is around a 50 slump but concrete is ordered drier for jobs such as fence posts and kerbing and wetter for pump mixes and footings.   If you would require a specific consistency, please call us to place your order.

Q. What is a slump test?

The concrete slump test is an empirical test that measures the workability of fresh concrete. More specifically, it measures the consistency of the concrete in that specific batch. This test is performed to check the consistency of freshly made concrete.

Q. What is concrete consistency?

Consistency is a term very closely related to workability. It is a term which describes the state of fresh concrete. It refers to the ease with which the concrete flows. It is used to indicate the degree of wetness. Workability of concrete is mainly affected by consistency i.e. wetter mixes will be more workable than drier mixes, but concrete of the same consistency may vary in workability. It is also used to determine consistency between individual batches.

Q. How do I know if my concrete is quality-assured?

Readymix concrete supplied by buyconcrete.co.uk is BSi Kitemark accredited.

The BSi Kitemark is a UK service quality certification mark which is owned and operated by The British Standards Institution.

This certificate shows we carry out processes ensuring the quality of the readymix concrete remains consistently high.

Q. How many wheelbarrows will it take to offload my concrete and what is the weight of concrete?

Dependant on size of barrow we work on approximately 24 barrows per cubic metre. The average cubic metre of concrete weighs 2.4 tonnes. A full concrete mixer 3m3 truck weighs approximately 15 tonnes.

Q.  Do you offer wheelbarrow hire?

Yes some regions will allow you to hire a wheelbarrow so that you can offload the concrete in batches.  If you wish to hire a wheelbarrow please call us.

We do not assist with the offloading into wheelbarrows - so please ensure you have teams of people available at your site to offload the concrete using wheelbarrows.

Q. Do you offer a pumped concrete service?

We do not currently offer a pumped concrete service.  However, we do offer a 'pump mix' that is suitable for pumping.  You will need to source your own pump company if this is a service you require.

If you would like more information on our pump mixes please call us.

Q. How long does it take for the concrete to go off?

The general rule of thumb is that you have 2 hours with the concrete. That of course depends on the weather.  If it's warmer the concrete will go off quicker, in cooler temperatures the concrete lasts longer after being mixed.

Q. What do I do with my leftover (surplus) concrete?

If you have readymix concrete left over from your order it is important that you manage it or dispose of it responsibly in accordance with local waste regulation requirements.  Consider using surplus concrete for other minor works on site.

For disposal, surplus concrete should be allowed to set and can be disposed of as a waste to a skip or taken to a local authority materials recycling facility for recycling. Remember concrete can easily be crushed and recycled.  You should try and take the concrete tor a recycling facility before sending to landfill.

To avoid having surplus concrete use our volume calculator at Step 2 when entering your volume.
